Many famous authors keep online blogs for book promotion. It is a standard in the publishing industry. Arguably, that was the motivation behind the peak of the online blog communities. In the margin of the best blogs was always a sales URL. Webpages with sales links became cheap to create, (they are now only 3 dollars on GoDaddy, and in some formats free) and people’s daily musings became the lure to check out sales links. Facebook, Twitter, and new blogging formats took away much of the net traffic from old style blogs like Livejournal. However, I still enjoy posting to my Livejournal for old time’s sake in addition to the new social media types. Authors all over the net still keep sales links, and many of them are very successful authors like R.R. Martin and Neil Gaiman.
R.R. Martin got into doing Livejournal in 2005, and still keeps his account active. I am on Livejournal at http://electricnight.livejournal.com/ his Livejournal at http://grrrm.livejournal.com/ Livejournal used to be the only game in town for streaming updates, and now has to compete with Facebook and Twitter. Facebook does the odd thing of limiting people to only 5000 friends (it used to only be 1000). After that they can only “like” your page, and very few of your page updates get seen unless you pay for promotion. Twitter has no limits, and shows all posts which in some ways explains the popularity. Martin’s Twitter is at https://twitter.com/GeorgeRRMartin_ and I am not against the branch out I am on the Twitter at https://twitter.com/PoeDaughter7 . However, his love of Livejournal has been long lasting. Wired commented on it in the article “George R. R. Martin’s 14 Greatest LiveJournal Entries” BY LAURA HUDSON http://www.wired.com/2014/05/george-rr-martin-best-livejournal/ Where it mentions his comments section was turned off for a very long time. One day he turned it on, and had hundreds of comments in an hour. Many people were seeking political debates. This is the strange blessing, and curse of writing in the Internet age. You can get fast feedback on what you do. Perhaps much faster than you were expecting, and can deal with in a day. My favorite journal was when he locked himself out of the house. Which seemed to be every other entry, and the guy really needs a spare set of keys hidden somewhere. I love many authors that blog, but his honesty is really fun on a bad day.
My next most loved blog to stalk has got to be Neil Gaiman at http://journal.neilgaiman.com/ His journal also hails back to the Livejournal hey day, and can in fact be an RSS feed in the Livejournal service (which I still do). He is also a lively poster on Twitter here https://twitter.com/neilhimself where he posts a great deal of his charity work with UNICEF, and of course book sales information. In addition he posts his love of buying black boots, and flying all over the world. I was brushing up on both these author’s posts because I am buying “Rogues” a book of short stories by both RR Martin and Neil Gaiman this week. It is very affordable, and easy to buy on Amazon.com.
These two blogs are a bit of a blog inspiration to me. I have kept personal journals since I was a kid, and still like to journal online. Some people have questioned why I write long journals with so many social media sources out there that don’t show your posts for a long time. Isn’t it creepy when people read your older posts? However, if you like to write you WANT your ideas to have permanent placement and public readability. That is part of the writing drive when it is real in your heart. Long journals do still have a place in the social media age.
