Reviews: This week’s Web-comic Wednesday Review is the online comic “Nice Hair” by A. Mauchline. What other web-comic could be Halloween review worthy? Nice Hair features a Tim Burton character, who is famous for Nightmare Before Christmas and its Halloween fun, and so it gets to be Halloween worthy for review. Enough with the small fries, and onto the big dogs of web-comic fandom! This web-comic has very few tie ins to web-comic networking, it is only based on a simple homepage. Yet it has made it into the commentary of many online webpages and magazines at this point. Due to the Bill of Rights and Freedom of Speech, I am allowed to have an opinion about and review things, and I have an opinion about this comic.
It rides on the coat tales of the 80s and 90s industrial-electronic music storefront, and all its incredible hair glory. What if the top legendary writers, directors, and singers from 80s and 90s electronic popular music all became roommates in one apartment on a reality show? Would a killing spree ensue? Well it turns out killer robots, wolf men, and much more unlikely things are bound to happen. Welcome to the world of Nice Hair.
Tim Burton director from the Halloween movie Nightmare Before Christmas, Andrew Eldritch, Robert Smith, and Neil Gaiman are all characters. Don’t ask me how you would get all these people into one house at one time. It is a fantasy comic, and does not have to have any reality base at all. Yet their noteworthy odd behaviors that music magazines have been commenting on for years are in the spotlight. Andrew drinks anything including bleach, Neil babysits the housemates and collects severed heads, and Tim Burton fights to save a kidnapped Danny Elfman. It is all very far out in an on target sort of way. All comedy has a bit of tragedy to it, and this comic is no exception. Fans tend to take music way too seriously. Famous people also tend to take themselves far too seriously, and it is always fun to picture the rock gods as “mere mortals” in comics. It takes the very strange behavior of very weird artists, and manages to make it human and funny.
Unfortunately, this comic has very irregular postings and no posting schedule. This is a “must” to generate a following in the web-comic writing world. In addition, the postings stopped a while back. The art style is solid, and the jokes are funny. Yet the comic has not taken on new characters in a new art age. Andrew and Smith hit their stride a while back, and a new generation needs balance with some new fame game jokes. I’m sure that Skrillex, Deadmaus, most of Vampirefreaks, and the guys from the Birthday Massacre would do some strange stuff if you trapped them in one house too. Still it is great, I say check it out.
