Word Bee Comic 23 Black Camera and Ruby Stone
“The image ‘Join, or Die’ is a well-known political cartoon, created by Benjamin Franklin and first published in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754… It is a woodcut showing a snake cut into eighths, with each segment labeled with the initials of one of the thirteen American colonies or region.” – Wikipeadia.org entry “Join or Die” March 11, 2013
Many people forget that Benjamin Franklin illustrated many of his publishing works with cartoons launching him to so much popularity that he was placed on the 100 dollar bill. There is a heavy link between political cartoons, photojournalism and more main-stream written journalism. I studied journalism heavily in school, and I like to think that I am one of my peers who in fact is using their publishing education. This cartoon is not a “political” cartoon but I do intend to go into that direction eventually. This cartoon series is populated almost entirely with magic “shadow animals”, and so I am working on getting more images of them into the mix. This panel shows a shadow wolf, to enter the mix with the more familiar shadow raven, and shadow owl I used heavily in the last three comics.
